Volunteering Beyond OSS discussion
while working on OSS projects is good, there is a larger non-technical community that can benefit from the volunteer efforts of developers
example project is the
Kassandra
project which created software for a disabled school girl to help her read
projects outside of the tech community can provide opportunity to work in domains that differ greatly from the standard business project
take on projects that are sized appropriately
be aware of post implementation support
get multiple people in the local community involved -- i.e. User Group members
make sure that you tackle the project to provide value for the end users and not just as a vehicle for trying new technologies
in Canada there is
MatchIT
but it doesn't have a lot of development stuff on it.
Microsoft frequently gets requests for help from non profit organizations. Contact your local DPE/MS rep if you're looking to find something
TechSoup
is available for non-profits to get cheap/free software from MS
